Washington Hospital has some of the most talented and qualified physicians in the Bay Area. In the last five years, a new type of physician has joined the team. Called hospitalists, they are highly qualified in their area of expertise and specialize in treating patients in the hospital. Hospitalists function as valuable partners with community physicians and are on-site and accessible to patients and families everyday around the clock.
Hospitalists maintain on-going communication with referring physicians to ensure the best possible and most appropriate care and to smooth the transition when patients are discharged back to their primary physician's care. In critical care units, some studies have shown that the presence of Intensivists helps to reduce the frequency of complications among seriously ill patients and can even lower death rates.
In a collaborative relationship with UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, specially trained pediatricians provide care for children at Washington Hospital.
Intensivists assist with care of the most critically ill patients. They have oversight of patients admitted to and discharged from the intensive care and critical care units.
Medicine hospitalists are internal medicine physicians who work with community primary care physicians, specialists and surgeons, on request.
Obstetric Hospitalists are available in-house 24/7 to provide assistance to community physicians and their patients.
