About Dr. Acosta-Goldstein

Suselina Acosta-Goldstein, MD, is board-certified in Psychiatry with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Columbia University, New York City, NY, and a medical degree in General Medicine from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. Staying at Southwestern Medical Center, she completed her residency in General Psychiatry and Women’s Mental Health and then went on to become a faculty instructor and eventual assistant professor for the department of psychiatry. Dr. Acosta-Goldstein has a broad experience, thanks to her previous history as an attending psychiatrist at the following: San Juan Regional Medical Center, Parkland Health & Hospital Systems, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and Baylor University Medical Center. Now, her journey brings her to Washington Township Medical Foundation as one of our psychiatry providers.

Dr. Acosta-Goldstein’s career is built upon her philosophy of care and that extends to how she interacts with her patients. She approaches patients “with curiosity and humility, and always on the path of learning.” She believes heavily in recognizing and weighing the cultural upbringing and immersion that her patients have when they come to her practice. Dr. Acosta-Goldstein understands that one’s culture can shape and dictate how suffering looks and feels. “Cultural psychiatry offers the approach of combining true patient-centered care with available scientific knowledge to help relieve distress and suffering in the patients that I treat.” Her practice’s interests are women’s mental health, particularly peri-partum psychiatry (treatment during family planning and pregnancy, post-partum), post-abortion, post-miscarriage, and active-fertility/infertility treatment. She also holds a special interest in the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr. Acosta-Goldstein chose the field of medicine because of the impact she could have on her community. She says “I wanted a career where I could positively impact the community around me while exploring my interests in science and using the strengths from my analytical oriented mind. To her, patient centered care means “caring for a person’s mind, brain, and body within the context of their values, cultures, and community.” This led her to the field of psychiatry as it best fit her goals and aim of helping others.

In her free time, Dr. Acosta-Goldstein is an avid reader and is usually reading three books at a time – with genres ranging from: fantasy, sci-fi, absurdist fiction, and historical fiction. She stays active by hiking, road biking, and practicing yoga. To flush out her creativity, Dr. Acosta-Goldstein paints abstract or pop art and sees it as a way to express her personality.
