Overall Hospital Quality & Safety

Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery

Washington Hospital Healthcare System (WHHS) earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery (ACSS) by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal symbolizes excellence that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to provide safe, high quality patient care. WHHS is one of 20 hospitals across the country to attain this prestigious certification. (November 16, 2023 – November 16, 2025)


American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation

The UCSF-Washington Cancer Center proudly achieved a three-year accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR). This accreditation process is meticulously crafted to champion excellence and foster educational advancement. For patients and their families, it serves as a solid assurance that their treatment takes place at a facility with the highest level of quality and radiation safety standards. ACS Surgical Quality Partner

Washington Hospital is proud to be designated as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner by the American College of Surgeons, underscoring its unwavering commitment to the highest standards of surgical care. ACS Quality Programs have a legacy of improving health care outcomes, preventing complications, saving lives, and reducing costs for more than a century. These programs are widely recognized as a crucial benchmark for assessing a hospital's surgical quality. (2023)


Excellence Award

Baby-Friendly Designation

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) named Washington Hospital a Baby-Friendly designated facility for its exceptional support of breastfeeding moms and babies.


Best of Fremont Award

Washington Hospital is the recipient of several of the Best of Fremont Awards, including best hospital. Several members of the Hospital medical staff also received Best of Fremont Awards or honors. (2022, 2023)


Best of Newark Award

Washington Hospital has been recognized as the Best Hospital serving Newark residents. Additionally, several members of the Hospital medical staff also received Best of Newark awards or honors. (2019)


California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative Award

Washington Hospital Healthcare System has been honored with the MDC Superstar Award: Medium Birth Volume Hospitals by the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative. This award recognizes hospitals with 1,000 to 2,499 annual births for their outstanding engagement with the Maternal Data Center. (2024)


Joint Commission Accreditation

Washington Hospital has earned the prestigious Joint Commission seal of approval. The full three-year accreditation is the Gold Seal of Approval from the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. (August 2014, 2017, May 2021)


Magnet® Status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center

Excellence Award

Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center is the nation's highest recognition of excellence in nursing care. Washington Hospital is among just 8% of U.S. hospitals that have achieved Magnet status and has held this prestigious distinction since 2011.


Quest for Zero Award in ED

Washington Hospital has been recognized by Beta Healthcare Group for its Quest for Zero quality initiative in the Emergency Department. Quest for Zero is a risk reduction program to improve patient safety. Washington Hospital earned the award when 100% of the Emergency Department nurses and physicians completed Tier 1 & Tier 2 of the Quest for Zero initiative. (2021)


Quest for Zero Award in Obstetrics

Washington Hospital has been recognized by Beta Healthcare Group for its Quest for Zero quality initiative in Obstetrics. Quest for Zero is a risk reduction program to improve patient safety. (2021)


Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change

Washington Hospital has received the Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change Award in recognition of its achievements in developing programs to prevent pollution, reduce and recycle solid waste, eliminate mercury, reduce water and energy consumption, and establish "green" purchasing policies. U.S. News & World Report

Washington Hospital ranks among the top 69 California hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. This recognition underscores the Hospital's dedication to maintaining high standards for patient care. (2023)

U.S. News & World Report has named Washington Hospital as a High-Performing Hospital for Knee and Hip Replacement. (2020)

Washington Hospital earned high performance ratings for congestive heart failure, COPD, hip replacement and knee replacement, which has led to a number 5 ranking in the San Francisco Metro Area and number 32 in California. (2018)


Cancer Care

Commission on Cancer Accreditation & Outstanding Achievement Award

Washington Hospital received three-year accreditation from the Commission on Cancer and also earned their Outstanding Achievement Award for cancer care. (2022)


Washington Hospital's Breast Program received three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and dedicated to the improvement of quality outcomes fo patients with diseases of the breast. (2022)


HERS Breast Cancer Foundation

Washington Hospital Healthcare System received the Hope Award from the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. (2023)


Laboratory

Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation

After conducting a detailed survey, The Joint Commission granted Washington Hospital's Inpatient Laboratory a full two-year accreditation. The Joint Commission's laboratory seal of approval verifies that Washington Hospital's operational systems, which are critical to the safety and quality of patient care, are of the highest standards in health care. The Joint Commission Advanced Primary Stroke Program Recertification

Excellence Award

The Joint Commission has granted Washington Hospital full recertification of its Advanced Primary Stroke program. The Stroke Program certification process is designed to help organizations continuously provide safe, high-quality care, treatment and services. Washington Hospital has received recertification for two more years and received no recommendations for improvement, which is the highest outcome possible for recertification. (2021)


Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for Stroke and Diabetes

AHA acknowledges Washington Hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. The Hospital earned the Get with the Guidelines - Stroke Gold Plus with Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. The Get with the Guidelines Elite Honor Roll recognizes hospitals that treat acute ischemic stroke in the most effective way possible using evidence-based guidelines. (2022, 2023)
