Minimally invasive total hip replacement

Medical Director John T. Dearborn is part of the team that developed minimally invasive total hip replacement: a revolutionary procedure that shortens time spent in surgery, minimizes pain, requires a smaller incision, reduces blood loss and significantly speeds recovery. While conventional procedures call for a five- to 10-inch incision, our procedure requires only a two- or three-inch incision. In addition to minimizing scarring, this smaller incision also dramatically reduces post-operative pain and recovery time. More than 98% of patients have been successfully rehabilitated without recurring problems or pain. What's more, patients who once could expect a five-day hospital stay are now back on their feet and back to their lives in half the time. Washington Hospital is one of only a handful of programs in the country that offers this specialized surgery.

Ortho-PAT (Perioperative Auto Transfusion)

No need to visit the local blood bank in preparation for heavy blood loss during surgery. Our Ortho-PAT technology salvages blood lost during surgery, allowing our nurses to give back your blood after the operation. And with minimally invasive surgery, blood loss is already reduced.

Progressive rehabilitation

Our progressive group therapy is designed for a smooth, comfortable and speedy recovery. To achieve these outcomes, our physical therapists employ twice-daily therapy sessions instead of the conventional once-a-day regimen. Our experience has shown us that twice-daily rehab is much more effective; it actually makes recovery easier. The first therapy session begins the day after surgery and most patients walk out of the hospital in two to four days.
