Children's Health and Safety Fair
Washington Hospital hosts a biennial Children’s Health and Safety Fair. The fair features interactive games and activities that focus on health and safety issues pertaining to children. Entertainment, free goodies and special surprises punctuate the fun for the entire family.
The event features fun activities such as a bounce house, face painting, as well as information from Hospital representatives and other local community agencies. "It’s fun for the family and fun for the Hospital to be able to present this great event," Traylor says. The American Academy of Pediatrics Web site, www.aap.org, contains information about the children's immunization schedule, breastfeeding guidelines, seasonal safety tips, including how to protect your children from accidental injuries, as well as simple solutions for safety around the home. Children’s Health and Safety Resources Throughout the Year Washington Hospital is a resource for education about child health and safety issues all year long. Parents of infants can join a free Baby ‘n’ Me Support Group that meets Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 2299 Mowry Ave., Suite 2C, Fremont. Infant and child safety classes, as well as infant and child CPR classes for caregivers of children, are also offered regularly at Washington Hospital. Expectant parents and new parents can learn how to care for a baby through parenting workshops. A Baby Massage class is available for babies and their parents. The always-popular Teddy Bear Clinic is staffed with doctors and nurses from Washington Hospital offering check-ups to beloved teddy bears and stuffed animals. Children are encouraged to bring their teddy bears to visit the doctor. The animals will even get a bandage if they need it. The Teddy Bear Clinic provides a chance for children to interact with the medical staff to help ease fears about going to the doctor.
"The Teddy Bear Clinic shows children that going to the doctor doesn’t have to be a scary thing," says Ruth Traylor, Director of Community Outreach for Washington Hospital.
The event provides screenings to check for vision, healthy lungs, physical fitness and body mass index.
Information on several children’s health and safety issues are also available at the fair, including topics such as asthma and asthma checks, information on health insurance for children and healthy eating for children.
