Awards and Recognition

Recognition can come in the form of awards, accreditation, certification or designations of excellence – all of which can help patients and families identify quality care. We are proud to have received recognition for many of our programs and services. Below are some recent highlights:

	In December 2012, the Washington Radiation Oncology Center received a three year term of accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
	HealthGrades named Washington Hospital a Five-Star Recipient for Joint Replacement for 7 years in a row (2006-2012). The Hospital also received HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award for 6 years in a row, and was ranked among the Top 10 in California for Joint Replacement (#3 in 2012) for 7 years in a row.
	Washington Hospital was named by HealthGrades as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement in 2012.
	Washington Hospital’s Stroke Program received the 2012 HealthGrades 5-Star Award for ranking among the top 5% in the nation for treatment of stroke. The Hospital was also named a recipient of the 2012 HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award.
	Washington Hospital is designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

	In September 2011, Washington Hospital was granted Magnet® status recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the highest level of recognition that a hospital can achieve for nursing excellence. Only 6.7 percent of hospitals in the United States have earned this status and Washington Hospital is one of five hospitals in the Bay Area to receive this designation.
	In September 2011, The Joint Commission named Washington Hospital as a Top Performer on Key Quality and Patient Safety Measures. It is a prestigious distinction, awarded to an elite group of 405 hospitals across the country that followed 22 important best practices 95% of the time or better.
	In September 2011, Washington Urgent Care was awarded accreditation by the American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM). Washington Urgent Care is the only urgent care facility in the Tri-City area to achieve this accreditation.
	In August 2011, Washington Hospital—for the third time in a row—was awarded the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers.
	Washington Hospital’s Stroke Program received the 2011 HealthGrades 5-Star Award for ranking among the top 15% in the nation for treatment of stroke.
	HealthGrades named Washington Hospital’s Center for Joint Replacement the #1 joint replacement program in California in 2011. HealthGrades is the leading, nationwide health care ratings, information, and advisory services company.
	Washington Hospital received the 2011 HealthGrades Award for Patient Safety Excellence, which places the Hospital among the top five percent in the nation for patient safety. Washington Hospital is the only hospital in the East Bay and among one of only 268 hospitals nationally to receive this distinction.

	Washington Hospital received the "2011 Partner for Change Award" in recognition of Washington Hospital's achievements in developing programs to prevent pollution, reduce and recycle solid waste, eliminate mercury, reduce water and energy consumption and establish "green" purchasing policies. Washington Hospital also received the Chamber’s Chair Award for unwavering support and critical contributions to the success of the Chamber. This is the highest honor given by the Chamber of Commerce and is awarded to a company, an organization or individual that has shown support and contributed to the Chamber and the business community.
	In February 2011, Washington Hospital had a successful, unannounced Patient Safety Licensing Survey by the California Department of Public Health.
	In November 2010, Washington Hospital received the StopWaste Business Efficiency Award for outstanding achievements in waste reduction and environmental performance.
	In 2010, Washington Hospital's Center for Joint Replacement (CJR) received a Five Star Customer Service Award from Professional Research Consultants (PRC). To achieve this, the Center for Joint Replacement scored in the top 10 percent nationally based on "Excellent" patient responses in the category of "Inpatient Orthopedic Services Overall Quality of Care." Even more impressive is the fact that The Center for Joint Replacement received the Top Performer Award for 2007, 2009 and 2010 for obtaining the highest ranking nationally of all orthopedic surgery units surveyed. The Top Performer Award is PRC’s highest honor.

	Washington Hospital's Stroke Program earned top honors by receiving the Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award as part of the American Stroke Association’s (ASA) Get With The Guidelines-Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) program, a national evidence-based initiative to improve stroke patients’ outcomes. Hospitals receiving the Gold Plus Award have reached an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care for 24 consecutive months.

	In July 2010, InHealth, Washington Hospital’s cable channel on Comcast Channel 78, marked its fifth anniversary by receiving TV honors for original productions from the 31st Annual Telly Awards. The winning program, Inside Washington Hospital: The Green Team hosted by Dr. John Thomas Mehigan earned a bronze Telly award. The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions.

	In June 2010, the Ohlone College Foundation honored Washington Hospital Healthcare System as the 2010 Citizen of the Year. In recognition of the hospital's many contributions to Ohlone College students and acknowledging the partnership of working together for the good of the community, Ohlone College named the Health Sciences Wing of the Ohlone College Newark Center after Washington Hospital Healthcare System.

	In March 2010, Washington Hospital's Community Cancer Program received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Furthering its reputation as a top provider for cancer care, Washington Hospital’s Community Cancer Program is only one of four hospitals in California and one of 82 hospitals in the country to receive this recognition.

	In December 2009, Washington Hospital received a three-year/full accreditation designation of its Breast Health Program from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Washington Hospital's Breast Health Program is the only program in Northern California to hold this distinction. With the recent news about changing recommendations for screening mammograms, it's more important than ever for women to access the best care and advice possible.
